This is Why!

Athen's Center

Before I left, many asked me, “why Greece?” Lately…I have begun to wonder the same thing myself.  Between my inability to communicate and CRG, I can’t wait for France.

I was facebooking Brian and subtly complaining about being homesick, when he reminded me that most would give anything to be in my shoes, and he said it sounds like I need to go see some architecture.

Oh yeah…architecture…this is why Greece…

So I hit day 5 in Athens and I had yet to see ONE ruin…no wonder I was down.  Between money exchange, internet issues, unpacking clothes, grocery shopping, and warding of creepy guys, we have been pretty busy…and while important…these are not the reasons we are here.

I decided that Brian was right, and I needed some sexy architecture.  Some good old stuff to fire me up…which meant…it was time to brave the Metro.

Dafni is about 4 or 5 stops south of Akropoli on the Metro line, and for 2 Euros both Snakeman and I can ride (I think that’s like $87.50 in US Dollars).  Much cheaper than the cab fare, and I got to see Jake’s excitement as he experienced his first subway.
When we arrived, we walked about fifty feet and there is was…the Acropolis, the center of Athens…and atop…the Parthenon.

Oh yeah!  THIS is why Greece!
The Greeks invented architecture, and I have always wanted to see the beginning. Since the advent of the Classic Orders, architects have been using them as model for all other styles.  Even buildings that don’t use the Classic principals are compared to those that do.  By definition…modern architecture is modern because it is not CLASSIC!

Like Vegas to a gambler, Greece is crack to a design junkie like me.  Even Snakeman announced that today was the best day of his life…as he hopped around on the ancient ruins.

I don’t know why it took me so long to make it to Athens Center…but…

THIS IS WHY Greece!

Love, Rach

If the exchange rate in Greece is $87.50 US to 2 Euro, you are in trouble, lady. Say it isn’t so…
